Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and Bridges

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth. This cap can restore a tooth that has minor damage. It is made in a lab with materials that look exactly like your natural tooth enamel. Although crowns are mainly used for restorative purposes, they are also used for cosmetic dental purposes.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a restorative dental device used to replace a missing tooth. Bridges are made from porcelain or ceramic and are held in place by dental crowns on either side. These two crowns are cemented onto the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to connect the bridge to the rest of the mouth. A dental bridge can be used to replace multiple missing teeth.

Comparison between dental crowns and dental bridges

Both dental crowns and dental bridges can restore the appearance and function of your smile. Your dentist can help you decide which is right for you.

Dental bridges are best for patients missing one to three teeth in a row. A dental bridge consists of two dental crowns on either end and one or more artificial teeth in between. Dental bridges require healthy teeth on both sides of the tooth to be restored.

Dental crowns are ideal for patients who have teeth that are damaged due to external trauma, severe wear, or root canal infection. Dental crowns are custom designed to fit your teeth. They are designed to fit comfortably and match your smile. Dental crowns also can be used to replace old metal fillings.

How is a crown or bridge made?

When you visit our dental practice, our dentist will conduct a detailed diagnosis of your oral condition to understand its severity. Further, we will take digital x-rays and oral scans to get a better view of the teeth and surrounding tissues. This data will be sent to a dental laboratory for fabricating the restorations. Meanwhile, we will place temporary restorations on the teeth to protect their prepared surfaces.

Once the permanent restorations are fabricated, we will remove the temporary restorations and replace them with permanent ones. A bite test will be taken to ensure your natural bite is retained and the new restoration fits perfectly.
