Pediatric Dentistry Q&A

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry diagnoses and treats oral health problems in children and teens. It combines preventive care, teeth cleaning, and education to help young people achieve healthy teeth, gums, and smiles.

Dr. Grace and the team want to make dental visits a pleasant experience. They understand that every child is unique. To ensure your son or daughter has an enjoyable experience, they set aside plenty of time and offer nitrous oxide to reduce fear and anxiety. What’s more, parents are welcome to watch the team as they work.

What services does pediatric dentistry offer?

Dr. Grace and the team offer a variety of pediatric dental services, including:

Oral exams

An oral exam assesses the health of your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth. If Dr. Grace discovers any abnormalities, like tooth decay or early indications of gum disease, she can order additional tests like X-rays or a biopsy.

Oral X-rays

Oral X-rays use ionizing radiation and electronic sensors to capture images of your child’s tooth roots and jaw. Dr. Grace uses X-rays to detect potential issues invisible to the eye and to guide certain types of treatment, like extractions.

Teeth cleaning

Teeth cleaning involves Dr. Grace or a member of the team removing plaque from your child’s teeth and beneath their gums. The process is quick and pain-free.

Fluoride treatment

If your child has weak enamel or a history of tooth decay, Dr. Grace might recommend a fluoride treatment. When applied to the teeth, fluoride strengthens your child’s enamel, minimizing the risk of cavities and damage.

Dental sealants

If your child experiences difficulty cleaning the teeth at the back of their mouth, Dr. Grace and the team might recommend sealants. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to your child’s molars or premolars. They prevent harmful bacteria from attacking the enamel, reducing the risk of cavities and decay.

Dental restorations

If your child develops a cavity or chips a tooth, Dr. Grace might recommend a restoration. Crowns, fillings, or dental bonding can repair enamel damage and restore your child’s smile to a healthy, vibrant condition.

If your child has difficulty losing a tooth, or the orthodontist would like a tooth removed in preparation for braces,  Dr Grace and her caring team will extract your child’s tooth without causing them discomfort.  Using nitrous oxide, your child will be relaxed and should experience a painless procedure.

When do my children need to visit the dentist?

Dr. Grace and the team recommend your children visit the dentist once every six months, even if their teeth and gums appear healthy.

Many oral health issues, like gum disease and cavities, present few obvious symptoms. Routine checkups with Dr. Grace can alert you to these and other issues when they respond best to treatment.
